The National Cemetery in Westwood would like assistance in retrieving flags placed in decorating the graves for the Memorial Day ceremony and activities (the same rules for respectful behavior apply).
The retrieval (pulling flags out of the ground, bunching and banding them, and putting them into the flag boxes) will occur Tuesday through Thursday following Memorial Day (6/1 through 6/3) from 2:30pm until 5:00pm each day.
They would really appreciate our assistance.

Once again the Jewish Committee on Scouting of the West Los Angeles County Council and the Malibu Lodge are joining together to provide the only non-Saturday Order of the Arrow Ordeal outside of the East Coast.
The ordeal will take place starting Saturday night May 29 after 9:30pm and will continue through early Monday morning May 31st.
Year after year this Ordeal has been rated as the best ordeal of the year!
We also invite any Order of the arrow member who is eligible to become a Brotherhood member with us. The Brotherhood Ceremony is held Sunday afternoon and again has been stated over and over to be the best in the country.
We have an additional opportunity for new and not-so-new members who would like to join us in running events during the day on Sunday and on Monday morning are welcome to come as well.

May 8, 2010 - Troop 126 pancake breakfast fundraiser
Troop 126 (Las Colinas District) will be hosting their 8th Annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, May 8th. It will be held from 8:30am to 11:30am at St. Luke's Church. The church is located at 5312 Comercio Way, Woodland Hills (1 block East of Canoga Ave. and 1 block south of Ventura Blvd.). This fundraiser directly helps the Scouts of Troop 126 with their various activities and advancements.

The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry Needs You... Calling all Scouts!
The SCV Food Pantry is in desperate need of volunteers for the Annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Saturday, May 8th from 1:30-6:30p.m. The SCV Food Pantry would literally run out of food during the summer if it were not for this food drive.
We need approximately 50 volunteers who will be assigned to two Post Offices and one storage facility here in Santa Clarita.
The volunteers at the Post Offices (Creekside Road or The Old Road - south of Calgrove and west of the I-5) will help the Letter Carriers unload their vehicles and place the bags/boxes of donated food in large wheeled bins and then roll them to the large trucks rented by the SCV Food Pantry.
The volunteers at the storage facility (EZ Access Self Storage on Carl Road behind AV Party Rentals off Newhall Road - formerly San Fernando Road) will help roll the wheeled bins off the trucks - pull any glass or boxed items from the bags if time allows - and stack all donated bags/boxes in the storage unit.
We can divide the time - 1:30-6:30p into two shifts if needed or the volunteers can work the entire time. Shifts would be 1:30-4:30pm and 4:30-6:30pm.

In memory: Bruce Jensen
It is with a very heavy heart that we must share with our Scouting family the passing of Assistant Scoutmaster Bruce Jensen.
Mr. Jensen passed away Saturday April 17th at home surrounded by his family after a brave, yet long fought battle with cancer. Bruce is survived by his wife Chris and his sons Eric (Life Scout), Andrew (Eagle Scout) and Robert (Tenderfoot Scout).
The Jensen family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that a donation could be made to the Troop 583 Bruce Jensen Campership Fund. This fund has been established to help send any financially disadvantaged Scout from Troop 583 to summer camp.
In keeping with the spirit of Bruce's dedication to Scouting and great love of the outdoors, the Jensen family has requested that a campfire memorial service be held Monday May 3, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Valley Trails Ranch, 30910 Sloan Canyon Road, Castaic, California. All are welcomed to come and celebrate Bruce's life and friendship. Scouts and Scouters are encouraged to wear Class A's.

What each Scout must bring along with them to the August session in order to complete the Coin Collecting badge:

Scouts are also encouraged to bring along one special coin (foreign or US) from their collection for a show-and-tell feature before the Scouts attend the session (option just to share or to fulfill Requirement #10C). Scouts who attend the badge session, tour the coin show (starting around 2 pm) and share what they learned on the tour with the Counselor(s) will meet Requirement #10B.
Other requirements (#1-5, #7 and #8) will be discussed during the merit badge session. Each Scout will be provided a worksheet which will be handed in and all necessary handout materials when they register on site. BSA blue cards of completion will be issued to all Scouts who complete the requirements. Partials for Scouts who do not complete all the requirements will also be issued.
Requirement #3 on coin grading will involve a Scout teamwork competition where teams will apply the just learned basic "photo grade" grading concept technique skills on examples of circulated Lincoln cents to the counselor.
Miscellaneous:
The Merit Badge session is a fun, interactive and hands-on learning experience. All forms of and types of money will be on display. Coin prizes for individual and/or group in class participation will be awarded to all Scouts who actively participate in the educational learning discussions!
In addition, all Scouts will receive a free "continue the numismatic learning and collecting experience" goodie bag at the conclusion of the badge session (3 pm) courtesy of the ANA, NASC, TEC, US Mint, BEP and coin dealer sponsors, Michael Aron, Steve Demmer, Dick Forrest, Don Hauser, Gene Henry, Paul Hollis, Scott and Lisa Loos, Armando Nieto, Nona Moore, Rick Snow and Lorraine Weiss.
Parents and adult leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Walt Ostromecki is a certified counselor for the Balboa Oaks District, W-LA Council and a governor and youth numismatic educator for the ANA. He received his Eagle Scout rank in 1966. He's been a coin hobbyist, author, speaker for nearly 40 years.
Albertus Hoogeveen is a registered assistant scoutmaster with Troop 93 in Fullerton. He's a 45-year veteran scouter, ANA life member and a coin collector since he was 10 years old.

- Requirement #9 A-D: Choose one. #9D is the easiest - Bring along a date set of US Lincoln cents (or any other type of US coin) since your year of birth. If a scout does not have a coin album to put them in, one will be supplied free at the session.
Other requirements:
Scouts are also encouraged to bring along one special coin (foreign or US) from their collection for a show-and-tell feature before the Scouts attend the session (option just to share or to fulfill Requirement #10C). Scouts who attend the badge session, tour the coin show (starting around 2 pm) and share what they learned on the tour with the Counselor(s) will meet Requirement #10B.
Other requirements (#1-5, #7 and #8) will be discussed during the merit badge session. Each Scout will be provided a worksheet which will be handed in and all necessary handout materials when they register on site. BSA blue cards of completion will be issued to all Scouts who complete the requirements. Partials for Scouts who do not complete all the requirements will also be issued.
Requirement #3 on coin grading will involve a Scout teamwork competition where teams will apply the just learned basic "photo grade" grading concept technique skills on examples of circulated Lincoln cents to the counselor.
Miscellaneous:
The Merit Badge session is a fun, interactive and hands-on learning experience. All forms of and types of money will be on display. Coin prizes for individual and/or group in class participation will be awarded to all Scouts who actively participate in the educational learning discussions!
In addition, all Scouts will receive a free "continue the numismatic learning and collecting experience" goodie bag at the conclusion of the badge session (3 pm) courtesy of the ANA, NASC, TEC, US Mint, BEP and coin dealer sponsors, Michael Aron, Steve Demmer, Dick Forrest, Don Hauser, Gene Henry, Paul Hollis, Scott and Lisa Loos, Armando Nieto, Nona Moore, Rick Snow and Lorraine Weiss.
Parents and adult leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Walt Ostromecki is a certified counselor for the Balboa Oaks District, W-LA Council and a governor and youth numismatic educator for the ANA. He received his Eagle Scout rank in 1966. He's been a coin hobbyist, author, speaker for nearly 40 years.
Albertus Hoogeveen is a registered assistant scoutmaster with Troop 93 in Fullerton. He's a 45-year veteran scouter, ANA life member and a coin collector since he was 10 years old.

This Sunday, April 11th 3-7pm you are invited to our tee-pee raising and patch party.
The event you have been waiting for has finally arrived, and Heyoka Chapter invites you.
We will be setting up a tee-pee and having a party. One of the best parts of this event is that some of the biggest patch collectors in the WLACC council will also be present along with some of their illustrious collections. Expect to see many patches for show, trade and sale.
Dinner is going to be pot luck. Everyone, please bring a side dish or dessert, along with your favorite 2 liter drink. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided.

Bring your Magic the Gathering cards too.

The Western Los Angeles County Council has requested the addition of another patrol for our Jamboree contingent. The Rocky Mountain Council (Pueblo, CO) and Los Angeles Area Council are also accepting Scouts from other councils to join their contingent.

The Governor and First Lady's Service Award will celebrate the volunteer contributions of California's greatest resource - its people. Award recipients will receive a personalized certificate from the Governor and First Lady.

Scouting's centennial is out of this world - literally!
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has officially taken its 100th Anniversary Celebration to new heights. Four Year of Celebration patches left the stratosphere today as cargo on the space shuttle Discovery's STS-131 mission to the International Space Station. A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference is the BSA's 100th Anniversary patch-earning program that allows participants to earn recognition for making a difference in their communities.

Earn merit badges through paddle sports
With over 120 merit badges out there, a dedicated Scout could potentially get over 20 of those merit badges with paddle sports alone. Merit badges can be obtained at any time, as there are no rank requirements in order to be eligible. With the technology of today (ie: phones with camera and video), Scouts are not always required to demonstrate these skills directly for their counselor or Scoutmaster, because it can simply be replayed for their review. This is also a great way to build a collaborative digital scrapbook of your Scout's achievements.
Be sure to actually read the requirements of the merit badges, as each one will have different skills that will have to be demonstrated exactly as stated. It is no easier to obtain them in one setting, as it takes time and must still be earned. However, this approach may allow your Scout to work toward several merit badges as once in stages, so keep a written log of individual accomplishments. Notify the counselor or Scoutmaster of your intentions ahead of time and then schedule time to review or demonstrate these skills so as to get proper credit for the effort.
"Before the boys even get into a canoe, they have to demonstrate swimming proficiency and safety afloat skills", says Chuck Douros, Advancement Chair, Troop 316, Forty-Niner District, Greater Yosemite Council. "In order to earn the badge they have to be able to drag an over-turned canoe to shore, drain it, return to deep water and re-enter the canoe without tipping it over. It's as fun for spectators to watch as it is for the boys to do."
The following is a short list of merit badges that could be potentially earned through paddle sports:

June 12, 2010 - Shotgun Shooting merit badge
Attention Shotgun Shooters:
Santa Clarita Valley Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation and Castaic Troop 583 are offering their annual Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge Day on June 12, 2010 at Oaktree Gun Club located in Newhall.
Participating Scouts will complete all of the Shotgun Merit Badge requirements, and if they are able to qualify during the shooting portion of the day, they will complete their merit badge.
The only prerequisite is that Scouts must be at least 12 years of age.
Please review the registration form for sign up information. When mailing in your form, please be sure print neatly. Your registration confirmation and further instructions will be sent to your email address.

Today marks the first day boys can begin earning Signaling, Tracking, Pathfinding, and Carpentry: four merit badges brought back for the Centennial year.
The program honors Scouting's rich 100-year history by introducing today's Scouts to the merit badges earned by yesterday's youth. To bring the badges into a 21st-century context, the BSA has created supplemental information guides that will accompany scans of the original merit badge pamphlets.
