My name is Casey Mackay from Troop 22, Las Colinas. For my Life Rank Project I am collecting and donating board games and art supplies for about 150 kids at the Boys and Girls Club of West Valley. Please help me with donations, the board games don't have to be brand new, it has to be in good condition.
Please call me at (818) 388-0584 so I can make arrangements to pick up your donations.
Your donations are tax deductible by the Boys and Girls Club.
Thank you so much for helping me.

Scouting family loses home to fire
During spring break, the Harwig family, a Scouting family from Pack 320 with a Wolf and a Webelos, lost their home to fire. The Pack held a fundraiser for them recently. In addition, the family is also active and involved with Woodland Hills Elementary School, and the school recently sent out the following message:
Over the past 10 years, I have worked with two other Scout families who have lost everything to fire and I have seen how hard it can be. Yes, insurance helps, but not as much as you would think. One mom told me of how a fire restoration company (mandated by the insurance company) charged $7 to save a mason jar that she could have replaced for 50 cents - and that $7 came out of what she was supposed to have to rebuild their lives. Another family also saw a lot of their insurance money get eaten away by costs such as these.
So, here is a great opportunity for a Scouting Good Turn. I dropped off my own envelope for the family this afternoon, and the school is still taking donations - so, if you can, please donate.
Woodland Hills Elementary
22201 San Miguel St.
Woodland Hills, CA 91364
(just off of San Feliciano Drive, just west of Topanga and north of Ventura Blvd.)
(818) 347-9220
Also, you can bring donations to Roundtable next week, Wednesday May 11th, at the LDS Church on Deseret at 7:30.
Thank you for any support you can give.

Las Colinas District Chair
If you are able to donate either a gift card to Target or cash, please place your donation in an envelope marked "Harwig Family Collection" and drop it in the school office.
Please note that donations of clothing, home-cooked meals, etc. are not requested or desired at this time.

September through December 2010 - Troop 504 Signaling and other centennial merit badges
Troop 504 will be offering the historic Signaling merit badge starting September 21 at our regular Tuesday night 7 pm meetings. Scouts from other troops are welcome.
Woodland Hills Presbyterian Church
5751 Platt Avenue
Woodland Hills 91367
(corner of Hatteras and Platt, next door to Hale Middle School)
This merit badge requires learning the International Morse Code and flag language. We will be showing different types of code practice gear, how to learn the code with the least pain for the gain, and discuss the schedule for earning this really great historic Merit badge. This one closes on December 31, 2010, so here's your chance.
Also, I am a counselor for the Pathfinding merit badge, Scott Rinaldi is a counselor for the Tracking merit badge, and Dave Hanson is a counselor for the Carpentry merit badge.
Don't miss this great opportunity to earn these centennial merit badges.
Any questions, I can be reached at (818) 888-8175.
Very truly yours,
Robert Hutchinson

October 2, 2010 - San Fernando Valley Leaders of Character
To all adults in Balboa Oaks,
If you attended our exceptional Balboa Oaks Adult Recognition Celebration you would have heard about our upcoming San Fernando Valley Leaders of Character event. We would like to fill in those of you who were not there. This event has 3 purposes:
This event will be October 2nd, 2010 at a location to be determined, Universal Studios and Warner Center are 2 of the places under consideration. It will be a gala, tuxedo optional event. We will be partnering with the Las Colinas District in this event. More details will be upcoming.
Our first priority is to choose our Leader of Character honorees. This is where we need your eyes, ears and experiences. We would like you to nominate your friends, associates, business partners or anyone who you think would be good candidates for this award.
You can go to our website and download an application to mail in, or you can fill out the form right there online. You may nominate Scouters and also reach out to the community and nominate those not involved in Scouting. Qualifications for nomination and a list of our previous honorees are on the website. You may nominate as many people as you feel worthy. People can not be considered without a submitted nomination. Should your nominee be chosen, you and your guest will be provided free admission to the event so you can share in the celebration and see them honored.
Please take a few minutes to tell us who you think would be worthy of this prestigious award. Don't think someone else will do it - it probably won't get done. Nominations close on May 1, 2010, so don't delay. Any questions feel free to contact me.

What is JOTA?
When Scouts want to meet young people from another country, they usually think of attending a World Jamboree. But few people realize that each year more than 400,000 Scouts and Guides "get together" over the airwaves for the annual Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). Modern technology offers Scouts the exciting opportunity to make friends in other countries without leaving home.
JOTA is an annual event in which Boy and Girl Scouts and Guides from all over the world speak to each other by means of Amateur (ham) Radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via radio waves. Since 1958 when the first Jamboree-on-the-Air was held, millions of Scouts have met each other through this event. Many contacts made during JOTA have resulted in pen pals and links between Scout troops that have lasted many years.
With no restrictions on age or on the number of participants, and at little or no expense, JOTA allows Scouts to contact each other by ham radio. The radio stations are operated by licensed amateur radio operators. Many Scouts and leaders hold licenses and have their own stations, but the majority participates in JOTA through stations operated by local radio clubs and individual radio amateurs. Some operators use television or computer-linked communications.
For more information or questions see the JOTA webpage or contact Sanford Weinberg at sanford@bhtroop360.org or (323) 937-1165. Talk in and Local Coordination on 147.270+ PL100.0
